A Detailed History of Ninja Swords
The ninja swords, known as ninjato or shinobi-katana, brim with mystery and debate. Although exact details of their use remain elusive, hints from relics and artifacts offer glimpses into their enigmatic history.
Ninjas were skilled at surreptitious missions and covert attacks, having their origins in Japan's feudal era spanning the 12th to the 19th century. As such, their armaments, especially swords, were carefully designed to be both multipurpose and easy to wield.
Unlike the curved blade of the well-known Katana sword, these swords have a straight blade, which makes them unique. Some say the straight shape was better for close quarters and quick draws, while others say it made it easier to hide, enabling them to pass for walking sticks or farm implements.
